Volcano Kettle

The volcano kettle is an idea so simple it seems almost too good to be true.

Made of aluminium for light weight it consists of a fire pan and a kettle that surrounds a central chimney like a water jacket.

A small fire in the pan acts upon the large surface area in the flue to heat the kettle contents in very little time.

Because of the updraught created in the central chamber the fire is easy to light and maintain for the five minutes or so needed to boil the water.

Being self contained it can be used with care in many places that an open fire would be inconvenient or simply not allowed.

It can burn wood, paper, grass or any similar materials and the small amount of fuel it uses, burns to fine ashes which are easily dispersed.  It is hard to think of a more environmentally friendly piece of cookware.

In fairness it is a little too big for backpacking but it’s certainly a handy addition to the equipment in a canoe or vehicle.
