Non Magnetic Magnifying Glass.

This little project came as a result of buying a new compass.

I regularly carry a magnifying glass with me for looking closely at stuff like fungi or plants when trying to identify them or even fire lighting in sunny condition.

While testing my transit compass out, the accuracy and fine scale of  prompted me to check my bearing  with a glass only to see the needle deflected by the metal rim on the  lens.    Doh!!!

Well this was what I came up with, A bit of leather, an awl and half  an hour with some needles and thread and I now have a magnifying glass  that fits better in my pocket and doesn’t attract the compass needle.

I started out with a small chamois bag to keep it in but since then I have made a slip case for it as you see above, it is a simple solution to the problem.

I like it, I hope you do too.

Four Constant Companions - © Gary Waidson - Ravenlore Bushcraft and Wilderness skills.

Just a little update. Ten years down the line, this is one of four constant companions that rarely leave my pocket except to be used. The cover has kept the glass in perfect condition and so far the stitching is holding up to pocket wear.
